This article is a simple "how to" about developing headers with fixed height. You'll agree that most of them fall into this category.
This is basically the description of my process when dealing with headers. It allows you to not only to be precise in positioning header elements, but also to manipulate with markup in a way that you prefer, or in a way that web standards imply. The markup I was reading a great trilogy over at Colly's and I thought maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to tell the same story – from our (designer's) point of view.
Every now and then we receive a task to do something that can not be described as the user-friendliest thing on the planet. Scrolling text would fall under that category. You know what I’m talking about: that stock market report scrolling thing that, back I the old days, we used to see on 50% of the sites… So, we received a task to pull this off and since we are going to do it, we might as well do it with style.
Here's a quick one. I am sure that you wanted to use different styles of image borders like dotted border style. The trouble is that css dotted border doesn't render well in all browsers.
So, I am presenting a little workaround to achieve various border effects. CSS & Design ==> DeskloadMy new project is out. It's called Deskload and it's an online desktop-like bookmark organizer. You can use it for visually organizing your bookmarks and accessing it from any computer. More cool features will come soon.
This is a cookie based and javascript (AJAX) driven tool. The development begun when I started to code some drag and drop stuff for my own purposes. It got larger and larger so I ended up with this load of code that could easily be presented as an online app. This is a presentation of a small trick that might become a life saver for your future projects in case you create cms templates and you have no control of what users might upload in your fixed width container.
Let's say that you created a wordpress theme with 540px wide content area, but user decide to upload a 600px wide image. Some browsers will handle it but some won't. I guess you know which ones I am referring too. Anyway, try to look at this example in IE6. It’s frustrating when you encounter a situation when someone steals your work. But there are things that you can tolerate and things that you can’t. It’s one thing when irresponsible individuals steal some of your work and present it as their own hoping they’ll get away with it. But when this kind of actions is pulled off by “web agency” or “web company” it takes stealing to a different level. What I am asking myself here today is when it will stop.
